At Grasshopper, we want to scale as fast as your business does. While every new account starts with standard security limits, our system is designed to grow with you. By maintaining a healthy account and consistent activity, your transaction limits may be eligible for automatic increases.
The Path to Higher Limits
To qualify for an automatic limit increase, your account must meet the following core requirements:
| Requirement | What This Means For You |
|---|---|
| Account Tenure | Generally, accounts must be open and active for at least 30 days before they become eligible for an initial automatic limit increase. This allows us to establish a baseline for your typical business activity. |
| Account in Good Standing | Your account must be managed responsibly. Specifically, this means no history of overdrafts and no ACH or check returns (NSF). Keeping your account clear of these "returns" proves to our internal system that your business is in good standing. |
| Active Transaction History | You must be actively using your account for your transaction history to count. Frequent successful deposits and payments create the data trail our system needs to verify that your business requires—and can handle—higher limits. |
| Consistent Average Daily Balance | We look for a consistent average daily balance that reflects your business's unique needs. There is no set dollar amount required to trigger an increase; since every business transacts at a different scale, we simply look for a healthy "cushion" of funds relative to your typical spending. |
Temporary & Permanent Limit Increases
While limits adjust automatically over time, you can request a manual increase at any time, especially if you have a specific, one-time business need (like a large equipment purchase or a major vendor payment) that exceeds your current limit.
- Temporary Limit Increases: Best for one-off transactions. Usually reviewed within 1–2 business days.
- Permanent Limit Increases: Best for long-term scaling as your revenue grows. Usually reviewed within 5-7 business days.
If your current limits do not meet your immediate transaction or operational needs, simply send a secure message through online banking or email support@grasshopper.bank with the requested amount and the business purpose for the increase.
For more information about our default limits, their purpose, and the approval process, refer to Understanding Account Limits & How to Increase Them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often does Grasshopper review my account for limit increases?
Our system automatically evaluates your account activity on a regular, ongoing basis. If your account meets the eligibility criteria, your limits will be updated automatically—no action is required on your part.
What criteria does Grasshopper look at to qualify me for a higher limit?
Eligibility is determined by a variety of factors, including your account tenure, average daily balance, consistent deposit history, transaction patterns, and overall account health. Keeping a positive balance and avoiding overdrafts are the best ways to qualify.
Will I be notified when my transaction limits change?
Yes. Whenever your limits are automatically increased or adjusted, you will receive an email notification detailing your new limits so you always know what to expect.
Why did my transaction limits go down, and can I get them back?
Grasshopper reserves the right to reverse higher limits if your account is no longer eligible, which includes occurrences of multiple overdrafts and/or returns. If your limits have recently been reduced and you would like to request a reinstatement, please contact Client Services via secure message. Keep in mind that approval is not guaranteed and is subject to a full account evaluation.
