With the Grasshopper Business Banking app, depositing checks is fast, secure, and completely remote. You can make deposits directly into your checking, savings, or money market accounts whenever—and wherever—it's convenient for your business.
Endorsement & Payee Requirements
To ensure your business funds are cleared safely and made available as quickly as possible, your physical check must meet specific bank-and-industry standards before you submit it. Completing this quick checklist guarantees a seamless review and protects your account from processing delays.
Step 1: Verify the Payee (Front of the Check)
Before you initiate a deposit, you must ensure that the payee's name matches your official business entity name or the name of an authorized signer exactly as it appears on your Grasshopper account.
- The Rule: The check must be made payable directly to your business or an authorized account signer. We cannot accept checks made out to third parties.
- Why It Matters: Federal regulations and bank policies strictly prohibit us from accepting third-party checks to prevent unauthorized fund routing and protect account holders.
- What to Watch Out For: Double-check that the payee's name matches our records exactly. If a check is made out to a third party or an unregistered name, the deposit will be rejected, and you will be required to obtain a corrected check from the issuer.
Step 2: Endorse the Check (Back of the Check)
Once you have verified that the payee name is correct, you must properly endorse the back of your check. Incomplete or incorrect endorsements are the most common cause of deposit delays and rejections.
- Rule: You must sign the back of the check and write "FOR MOBILE DEPOSIT AT GRASSHOPPER BANK ONLY" in the designated endorsement area.
- Why It Matters: This specific endorsement officially authorizes the digital transfer of your check to Grasshopper Bank. It acts as an essential security layer, declaring that the physical check cannot be intercepted and cashed or deposited anywhere else.
- What to Watch Out For: Both a physical signature and the written phrase are required. Missing either of these elements, or failing to write the phrase clearly, may result in a rejection of your deposit.
⚠️ Important Note: Adhering to these guidelines ensures our system and/or team can easily validate your deposit, keeping your business cash flow moving without interruption. If the payee name does not match your account, or the endorsement is missing, incomplete, or modified, your deposit may be rejected, requiring you to correct the issue and resubmit, which can delay the availability of your funds.

After You Submit Your Deposit
Once you tap deposit, your check enters a secure processing workflow. We want to make sure you know exactly what happens next, when your funds will become available, and how to handle your physical check.
How Your Deposit is Processed
To keep your accounts safe and manage transaction risk, every mobile deposit goes through a quick, multi-stage validation process:
- Automated Validation: Behind the scenes, our systems automatically check your submission for image clarity, matching dollar amounts, duplicate check detection, and early fraud indicators.
- Verification Review: Most deposits are accepted automatically. However, high-dollar checks, deposits into newer accounts, or unusual transaction patterns may be routed for manual review by our team.
- Clearing & Settlement: Once verified, we securely coordinate with the issuing bank to settle the transaction and transfer the funds.
Mobile Check Deposit Timelines
While depositing a check digitally is incredibly convenient, processing times are not always immediate. Several key factors influence how quickly your funds are cleared and released:
- Deposit Cutoff Times: Deposits submitted after our daily business cutoff time, or on weekends and bank-observed holidays, will begin processing on the following business day.
- Check Amount: Larger check values may trigger additional safety holds to verify funds with the issuing bank.
- Account History: Newer accounts or accounts with limited transaction history may occasionally require extra review before funds are released.
- Check Type: Government, business, and personal checks each have different industry-standard processing and clearing timelines.
⚠️ Important Note: We occasionally place temporary holds on certain deposits to protect your business and our institution from fraud, ensuring the funds successfully clear the issuing bank before they are spent.
